Welcome, Dear Student, to the Department of Art History

The Department of Art History was established in 1998 and is dedicated exclusively to postgraduate studies (Diploma – Master’s – Ph.D.). It is the first department in Egypt and the Arab world to specialize in the academic discipline of art history. The nature of its study reflects its mission to advance artistic culture and knowledge through analytical and critical approaches that enable the interpretation of artworks across various historical periods. The department also aims to promote scientific and artistic awareness related to cultural heritage management and the dissemination of art knowledge.

Specialized study in art history addresses the cultural and civilizational diversity of different societies, spanning from prehistoric times to the present day. The department offers a Postgraduate Diploma in Art History and Restoration, a Master’s degree in Art History, and Ph.D. programs with specializations including:

• Ancient Egyptian Art History

• Christian and Islamic Art History

• Ancient Eastern and Western Art

• Art History from the Middle Ages and the Renaissance to the Modern Era

In addition, the department teaches the History of Art course across all departments within the Faculty.
