Welcome, dear student, to the Department of Painting

The Department of Painting is one of the first three departments established at the School of Fine Arts in 1908. It aims to graduate visual artists who possess the ability for artistic creativity and a strong command of the language of painting in particular, while also being well-versed in the elements of visual arts in general. The department enables students to practice the art of painting and helps them develop their own artistic style based on sound and well-studied artistic principles. It also enhances their capacity for artistic appreciation and self-critique.

Graduates are qualified to contribute to the enhancement of public taste in the field of painting specifically, and in the visual arts more broadly. The program helps students develop their aesthetic and sensory vision. The department offers two academic programs: the Painting Program and the Mural Painting Program. Specialization in either program begins after the student successfully completes the first academic level.

Vision of the Department of Painting

The Department of Painting aims to provide advanced educational services and produce distinguished research that enriches creative values, contributing to the advancement of academic painting and actively participating in the desired cultural renaissance of modern Egyptian society. It also seeks to develop public taste and enhance visual and aesthetic culture through the dissemination of painted artworks and mural paintings integrated with architectural designs. In addition, the department participates in artistic events both locally and internationally, reflecting the visions of contemporary Egyptian art with all its aesthetic, intellectual, and expressive dimensions.

Mission of the Department of Painting

The Department of Painting provides academic education and research services aligned with global quality standards to prepare academically skilled and creatively distinguished graduates in the field of painting. Graduates will master various techniques, develop their intellectual and research abilities, and acquire effective communication skills. The program aims to enable them to refine their aesthetic and sensory vision, so they can play an active role in elevating public taste and participate in artistic forums both nationally and internationally—thus ensuring Egypt maintains its rightful cultural and artistic standing.

This program focuses on the academic study of mural painting on two-dimensional surfaces using a variety of materials suitable for murals, most of which are intended for outdoor display and long-term durability—often lasting for decades. The program emphasizes the design and execution of murals associated with different types of buildings and constructed from diverse materials such as mosaic, stained or leaded glass, stone, and other mediums. It includes subjects like still life, live nature, landscapes, and free-themed compositions, in addition to the study of mural design principles and how to apply them in harmony with the surrounding environment, as well as the technologies of mural materials.

Students practice mural painting through the selection and use of appropriate materials, methods, and environmental settings, applying a range of artistic techniques. Graduates of the Mural Painting Program demonstrate strong observational skills, critical inquiry, and an awareness of the importance of self-development through ongoing research. They possess a broad cultural knowledge and are familiar with professional practices in the field.

The program fosters the ability to express individuality, generate and evolve creative ideas into artistic outcomes, and promotes an awareness of the role of imagination and intellectual engagement in the creative process. Students are trained to conduct research and explore a wide range of sources, reach conclusions, and express their work individually or collaboratively, whether visually or verbally. Participation in discussions and objective critique is essential, allowing students to benefit from the insights and experiences of others—especially after acquiring practical knowledge, artistic techniques, and theoretical foundations.
