Sculpture Department

About the Sculpture Department

Welcome, dear student, to the Department of Sculpture

Sculpture is considered one of the oldest forms of visual arts in general and one of the oldest disciplines in the fine arts. It is also one of the first three departments established in 1908. Throughout thousands of years, ancient civilizations produced many sculptural works that reached perfection and served as models for understanding the principles of shaping, design, and aesthetic values. Sculpture is a unique discipline, as it deals with three-dimensional forms and structures, giving it a wide variety of possibilities in artistic production. It also allows for interaction with other fields of art, such as architecture and interior architecture. Sculpture plays a crucial role in beautifying squares, cities, festivals, and creating memorial works that immortalize and document significant events. The department offers three distinct programs: (Field Sculpture Program) – (Wall Sculpture Program) – (Marionette Sculpture Program).

Vision and Mission

Vision

The Department of Sculpture aims to prepare and qualify creative graduates who are well-versed in the latest creative achievements and equipped with the skills, knowledge, and the value of scientific research in art. Graduates will be able to apply this practical and artistic knowledge in the field of sculpture, while developing these skills to express the society they live in through their creative works. They will also participate in local and international art exhibitions and gain an understanding of the communication between the creator and the audience, as well as how to interact with modern technologies, future ideas, and the demands of the contemporary world.

Mission

The mission of the department is to prepare and qualify creative graduates who are capable of interacting with cultural and academic institutions, and able to provide aesthetic solutions for various environments, engaging with contemporary societal activities. The Department of Sculpture strives to offer intelligent educational services at all cultural, scientific, and social levels through specialized works that align with the challenges of the modern age and the demands of the labor market, aiming to achieve sustainable development.

Field Sculpture Program

In this program, all aspects related to the creation and execution of field sculpture works suitable for open spaces are studied. This includes the necessary characteristics, principles, and knowledge, whether specific to the construction conditions or the nature of the location and surrounding environment, as well as concepts, popular heritage, and community culture. The Field Sculpture Program focuses on the design and execution of three-dimensional works that consider relationships, proportions, aesthetic and formal values. These works are executed using various materials that are appropriate for the theme, location, and environment, as well as the creation of field works depicting characters and symbols of particular significance to the community.

The field sculpture specialization aims to prepare sculptors capable of designing and executing field sculpture works in various sizes and materials, embodying aesthetic values, expressive capacity, and quality of execution. This is achieved by drawing on the aesthetics of nature, community culture, and the elements and conditions surrounding the sculpture site. In addition, students gain a range of specialized knowledge and sciences (such as model carving, field sculpture, and direct carving), as well as humanities related to the field (such as art history and philosophy of art), and engineering sciences (such as perspective, architectural design principles, and site design).

Wall Sculpture Program

Wall sculpture is one of the most widely used forms of sculpture in various life, architectural, industrial, and artistic aspects. It fundamentally integrates with architecture, adding an artistic and aesthetic dimension to both exterior and interior surfaces. Wall sculpture reinforces artistic and architectural identity and complements it within a cohesive design system. It also features a broad capability for storytelling and narration through designs on the facades of institutions and public buildings with specific character, such as government, public, religious, and specialized entities. It affirms their identity and becomes a symbol, title, and a unique formal relationship for them.

The specialization in wall sculpture includes the design and execution of coins, shields, awards, and medals using artistic and formal techniques that combine the subject matter and aesthetic design to fulfill functional purposes. Wall sculpture has the unique ability to connect with the general public through its presence on building facades, bases of fieldworks, or even in industrial fields. It is one of the most important branches of art that can be used to affirm national identity, community culture, and art. It also serves as one of the most significant means of historical recording and commemoration, not only for symbols but also for national events and occasions.

The Wall Sculpture Program focuses on the design and execution of wall sculpture panels, considering relationships, proportions, aesthetic and formal values, and using a variety of materials that fit the subject, location, and environment. Thus, the Wall Sculpture Program aims to prepare sculptors capable of designing and executing wall sculpture works in various sizes and materials that embody aesthetic values, expressive ability, and quality of execution, while incorporating community culture and surrounding elements. In addition, students gain specialized knowledge and skills (such as model carving, wall sculpture, direct carving, and medal carving), humanities related to the discipline (such as art history and philosophy of art), and engineering sciences (such as perspective, architectural design principles, and site design).

Marionette Sculpture

The Marionette and Mask Program is one of the newly established specializations in the fine arts. It focuses on sculpture in a way that distinguishes it from other fine arts disciplines, as it involves working with three-dimensional forms and structures. This program is closely connected to festivals, national celebrations, puppet theater, and events of social, historical, artistic, and commemorative value, which immortalize and document significant occurrences.

In the field of marionette and mask sculpture, it involves the creation and execution of sculptural works suited to the characters to be portrayed, ensuring that they are executed in the best possible way, aligning with the nature of the event or occasion, while also reflecting the cultural concepts and traditions of the society. The program focuses on the design and execution of sculptural works in the form of marionettes or masks, often differing in scale from the usual proportions of characters or faces. These works consider relationships, proportions, aesthetic and formal values and are crafted using various materials that suit the theme and location, whether in festivals, specialized museums, themed parks, or puppet theaters. Additionally, the program involves the creation of sculptures of historically, artistically, or educationally significant figures that play an active role in society.

The Marionette and Mask Sculpture specialization aims to prepare sculptors capable of designing and executing marionette and mask works in various sizes and materials, embodying aesthetic values, expressive capacity, and quality of execution. This is achieved by drawing on the aesthetics of nature, community culture, and surrounding elements.
