About the Department of Architecture

Welcome, Dear Student, to the Department of Architecture

The Department of Architecture is the oldest of its kind in Egypt, having been established in 1908. It is responsible for delivering architectural education within the Faculty and covers a wide array of academic and research areas, including architectural and urban design, planning, environmental studies, computer applications, project management, architectural theory, and building regulations. The curriculum is further enriched by supporting courses in the humanities and engineering, which are essential for the accreditation of the department's graduates by the Engineers Syndicate.

The department offers one core academic program: the Architecture Program, in addition to a fee-based program titled Sustainable Architectural and Urban Design.

Program Objectives – Architectural Design

The Architectural Design Program aims to create functional built environments that accommodate human activities across diverse settings, while taking into account material, historical, cultural, social, political, and environmental diversity.

Architectural education is based on an interdisciplinary foundation, drawing upon a wide range of fields related to architecture. This comprehensive approach prepares architectural engineers who possess both artistic and engineering sensibilities, and who are well-versed in scientific, technical, and humanistic knowledge. The curriculum incorporates the latest global developments in technology, material properties, construction methods, urban planning, and their relationship to societal needs, in addition to studies in environmental sustainability.

The program also aims to equip students with both practical skills and theoretical knowledge in areas such as the history of civilization, architectural history, and architectural and artistic heritage in Egypt and around the world. It addresses key issues such as climate and environmental influences, energy consumption, building efficiency, and their impact on the environment.

Proficiency in information and communication technology, research skills, and effective use of knowledge resources are core features of the curriculum. Furthermore, students study construction laws and regulations, building economics, specialized codes, project management, and administrative and legal frameworks related to the profession. Emphasis is placed on time management, respect for cultural diversity, acceptance of aesthetic differences, effective communication and marketing skills, and active contribution to the application of aesthetic values, preservation of identity, and social responsibility.
